Tuve truck plant strengthens power resilience and flexibility with 10 MW BESS

Volvo Energy has delivered ten PU2000 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to the Volvo Trucks plant in Tuve, Gothenburg. With a total power of 10 MW, the installation is one of the largest commercial and industrial battery energy storage projects in Sweden to date — and an important step in future-proofing one of Volvo Group’s key production sites.

As electrification accelerates, access to reliable and flexible energy is becoming increasingly important for industrial operations. At Tuve, the ten PU2000 units will help the site manage its energy needs more flexibly, support the charging of electric trucks and strengthen resilience in an increasingly constrained grid environment.

“The 10 MW battery energy storage system delivered to Tuve is one of the largest Commercial & Industrial battery projects in Sweden to date. It adds significant flexibility to the site, combining fast-response capabilities with several use cases, including charging support, peak shaving, energy arbitrage, enabling solar energy optimization, grid balancing services and participation in flexibility markets,” says Elisabeth Larsson, Head of Sales, Services & Engineering Support, Volvo Energy.

The system is also equipped with advanced digital capabilities and Volvo’s high standards for cybersecurity, enabling secure monitoring, control and optimization as part of the site’s wider energy infrastructure.
 

Supporting the electric truck journey

Tuve is home to Volvo Trucks’ production of heavy-duty trucks, including electric trucks. As an increasing share of the vehicles produced are electric, and require high power charging during the process, managing power demand efficiently becomes more important.

Future-proofing Tuve — and Hisingen

The installation is not only designed to address today’s energy needs. It is about preparing the Tuve plant for an energy system where flexibility will become increasingly important.

Growing electrification and industrial development in Hisingen are putting additional pressure on available grid capacity. By adding 10 MW of fast-response energy storage, the Tuve plant gains greater flexibility in how and when it uses electricity, minimizing the impact on, or even supporting the local grid.

Walking the talk

For Volvo Energy, the Tuve installation is also a powerful example of putting our technology into practice within the Volvo Group.

The same PU2000 technology that Volvo Energy offers to customers is now supporting one of Volvo Group’s own production sites. It demonstrates how battery energy storage can help businesses navigate grid constraints while supporting electrification, increasing resilience, and creating value from energy.

“The business model goes beyond simply installing batteries. This is one of the most important installations we have delivered for the Volvo Group. It is a multiple installation in a complex environment and demonstrates what the PU2000 can deliver, also when deployed at scale,” says Elisabeth Larsson.
