Volvo Group announces the strategic Energy Park initiative in Mariestad, Sweden, where Volvo Energy will provide 70 MW of battery storage power to support grid stability and the transition to a more sustainable energy system.
The energy park will grow stepwise over time. Volvo Energy will deliver the power units in phases, starting with ten units of PU2000 (high-performance Battery Energy Storage System) in Q1 and becoming fully operational during 2027.
The investment in the energy park is a great step, creating the Group’s first large-scale site with our common capabilities. The battery storage from Volvo Energy is an integral part, delivering flexibility, resilience, business opportunities and demonstrates what we can deliver at scale
For Volvo Energy, the installation is yet another major step, and a powerful example of putting our technology into practice within the Volvo Group. The same PU2000 technology that Volvo Energy offers to customers will be supporting two major Group locations; the recently delivered 10MW at Tuve site, and now the energy park in Mariestad.
System stability and resilience in the energy supply is key when running a site, especially for an industrial operation of the scale we are planning for.
The energy park will help reduce energy costs while also contributing to a more resilient grid in the region. Since Volvo Group has most of its Swedish production in the region already, the energy park will add capacity and support resilience in a grid with high energy consumption. “Lowering our energy costs while contributing to greater grid stability and access to green energy in the Mariestad region is an important proof point of the responsibility we take and the sustainable mindset that has guided us throughout the planning of this installation.” Fredrik Agelen ends.
The site symbolizes a shared vision of a more robust, flexible and sustainable energy ecosystem where further advanced energy solutions will be evaluated.
The energy park is also intended to serve as a customer demo site at real scale and with real business cases and capabilities, demonstrating advanced energy solutions for our customers including Volvo Group’s range of electric applications which require high-power charging as part of the operations.
This installation demonstrates that our solutions can be deployed at scale at major industrial locations. It will optimize and stabilize the energy supply, generate additional market revenues from energy markets, reduce energy costs and significantly increase flexibility. It will also provide other benefits such as charging support, peak shaving capabilities, energy arbitrage and the integration and optimization of renewable energy, such as solar and wind.
