Three of the engineers and their teams who helped make it happen, Claus Biller, Hossein Emamjomeh, and Murtaza Khambaty, share how innovation, teamwork, and digital vision came together in the PU2000 BESS.
How does the Volvo Cloud Energy Management System (VEMS) you designed integrate with the PU2000 to improve performance?
“We have built a cyber-secure connection that allows us to operate the BESS based on live data streamed to our Volvo cloud. It lets us optimize performance dynamically, considering revenue generation, CO₂ impact, battery degradation, and energy profiles. It is about turning data into smart, sustainable decisions.”
What excites you most about future digital innovations in energy storage and management?
“What excites me is seeing Volvo products and services working together seamlessly, exactly as Martin Lundstedt’s formula describes. My favorite example is our EVSE charger booking feature for truck customers, allowing them to secure power weeks in advance. It is a simple idea with a big impact, putting us at the forefront of digital energy management.”
If you had to explain VEMS to a non-engineer over coffee, how would you describe it?
“I would say, think of it as the dashboard of your autonomous car, guiding you safely while you sit back and enjoy the ride. The VEMS does the same for your BESS assets. It gives full visibility and control to monitor, optimize, and maximize your fleet’s utilization from one digital platform.”
Which feature or improvement are you most proud of, and why does it matter for customers?
“The PU2000 is an all-in-one solution for organizations pursuing renewable and climate goals. It connects directly to a 3-phase 400V low-voltage network, removing the need for transformers or expensive site infrastructure. That simplicity lowers barriers for customers transitioning to sustainable energy.”
From your perspective, what was the biggest challenge in developing the PU2000?
“Integrating and balancing multiple subsystems - electrical, thermal, mechanical, and software - into one product. Each had its own constraints, and aligning them without compromising safety was a real challenge.”
If you could describe the PU2000 in just three words to a friend outside work, what would they be?
“Reliable. Safe. Sustainable. It is truly a one-stop solution that reflects Volvo’s values in every detail.”
The future of energy
From digital innovation to design integration and safety validation, the PU2000 represents the best of Volvo Energy’s collaborative spirit. As Claus, Hossein, and Murtaza show, it is not just a product. It is a new way of thinking about energy storage: connected, intelligent, and built to last.
