Behind Volvo PU500: perspectives from product and sales

Volvo Energy’s PU500 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) marks a major step forward in mobile energy solutions. An interview with Xavier Delacour, Chief Project Manager of PU500 at Volvo Energy, and Victor Olsson, Sales Manager BESS Nordics, explores the inspiration, development, and future of the PU500.
Behind Volvo PU500 Perspectives from Product and Sales

Meeting market needs for mobile power unit

“As society moves toward sustainable transport and equipment through electrification, there’s a growing need for flexible charging solutions,” says Xavier Delacour.

“While the charging infrastructure network is expanding quickly, mobile solutions are essential to support transport routes and construction sites where the grid is weak or non-existent. The PU500 answers this need, helping to keep businesses rolling with sustainable energy.”

The PU500 is the first in Volvo Energy’s new line of battery energy storage products. Packaged in a 10-foot container, this all-in-one solution can be installed almost anywhere and is among the first products from the Volvo Energy BESS family to reach the public market.

What makes the PU500 stand out?

“For me, the PU500 is a cutting-edge mobile energy solution,” says Victor Olsson.

“It combines premium design with exceptional safety and cybersecurity features, setting it apart in the market. With up to 540kWh capacity and an integrated 240kW DC charger, it’s highly efficient and perfectly suited for industries relying on electric fleets.”

The PU500 ensures seamless integration and reliable energy management, exceeding modern energy solution demands.

As a springboard for the PU500.

The PU500 development journey builds on Volvo Group’s long history of electrification. “Before Volvo Energy was established, Volvo Construction Equipment piloted a similar power unit. We used the learnings from that pilot as a springboard for the PU500." Xavier explains.

Market demands shaped the design, from best-in-class features to multi-segment versatility.

“When deploying new products in an established business, we knew hesitation could be a challenge. So, we focused on securing delivery of a high-tech product wrapped in a simple, safe, and user-friendly experience.” Xavier adds.

Fast time to market is critical. "We kept a pragmatic, balanced project management approach to move quickly, despite evolving battery legislation being a constant challenge."

Collaboration across the Volvo Group

The PU500 project succeeded thanks to strong internal and external collaboration.

“We worked closely with Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Group Technology, and ZEM, a majority-owned Volvo Group company,” says Xavier. “Tight cooperation, fast design loops, and a strong problem-solving spirit across all teams made this project a success. Despite obstacles along the way, the teamwork was fun and rewarding.”

Looking ahead: the future of mobile energy

Victor sees a bright future:

"With the rapid growth of electric fleets and the drive for greener options, demand for mobile energy solutions like the PU500 will only increase. The PU500 is launching now and will be ready for first deliveries after the summer holidays — hopefully to you!"

Flexible purchasing options will be available, including direct sales and operational leases through Volvo Financial Services. Volvo Energy will also offer comprehensive monitoring and maintenance services, ensuring peace of mind as customers transition to electrification.
